Today Craig (Mrs McIntosh's husband) brought 

Mrs McIntosh's family puppy to meet us. 

He is lovely, cute and cuddly.  He is called Winston and has just turned 1.  We can't wait for him to come again!

Assembly Awards This Week

We had a busy assembly this week led by Room 21. A lady came to talk to us about the 40 hr famine, the kindy came and sang us two songs and a lady from Travel Wise came to congratulate children who are using the Walking School Bus.
Congratulations to SD for recieving the Special Terrific Person award this week and to AC for recieving the values for Responsibility.
Well done to RC and EK for recieving certificates for being part of the Walking School Bus Programme!

Music lessons

We love our music lessons with Mrs Jo.... here we are playing xylophones and boom whackers.  NZ's Got Talent here we come!  Would you vote for us???

Tip Top ice cream factory visit

Here are some excerpts from our recounts…

After that we saw a glass and it said “touch me!” Everyone touched it.  It was four degrees.  After that we went in the happy tunnel.  It was called that because when adults went in it they would go all crazy sometimes and my favourite smell was orange.  My worst was coconut.  It smelt horrible.  Finally we went in a room and sat on plastic seats then we got to choose an ice block.  I chose a Tongue Twister.  My ice block was melting and my hands got sticky.

When we got there, we first saw all the pipes that led all around the factory.  We saw shapes that meant things and they were all different colours.  Next we went to four ice cream smelling sort of pipes.  The second pipe smelt like mint.  That’s all I can remember.  Later on we saw big blobs of ice cream going into boxes, next a thing flattened the blobs.  The a thing put on the lids.

We went in a bus.  We had to climb a heap of stairs.  Finally we got up the stairs.  We went into a room.  This was when we met Paula, the tour guide.  She led us to some roome in the factory.  We saw the factory’s ice cream machines making ice cream.

On our brilliant Monday we went to Tiptop! We learnt all about how to make yum ice cream, there’s a trick for pasteurise: past your eyes.  Paula was our awesome tour guide.One hall was called the happy tunnel, there were four big pipes.  The first one was maybe coconut, the second was mint, third caramel, fourth orange, Yum!

Later on all of us got off the bus and walked up about 20 steps.  I was exhausted already but I was still excited.  Next we all got into the factory.  Then we had to follow a girl called Paula.  When we were walking all of us got to see how much all the ice cream costs.

When we were on the bus I thought we were on a roller coaster at Rainbow’s End because I’ve been there before, it was scary.  Paula showed us around the Tip Top factory and that was our Tip Top trip.

We got stuck in some traffic.  When we got to Tip Top we went up the stairs.  We were learning about where everything was and then we went outside to look at an old Tip Top car then we went up some steps then we went to smell some tall containers so we smelled them thenwe went to watch amovie and eat an ice block.  It was fun.

After the bell rang we had to wait for some people and I didn’t like it.  After everyone came we walked to the big bus and I got a front seat.  It took a long time to get there because we had to go on the motorway.  The bus made me fall off the seat.  Later when we got there, we had to climb a lot of steps, it felt like a thousand steps to me.  So after the steps we had to go in this little room where our tour guide Paula told us the rules.

We had to climb up the stairs and meet our tour guide Paula.  She took us inside the factory.  The first thing we looked at were the vats that mixed the plain ice cream by adding sugar, milk and glucose.  The machine makes boxes and the lids.  In the freezer they keep the ice cream until they trucks take it to the shops.

Homework Task For Week 3

Room 19 published some delicious sounding recipes last week for homework! On Friday the children got their homework task for next week (Week 3) early in case they needed more time to complete the task (perfect for a wet weekend!) The task this week is to make the recipe they selected and record what changes occurred during the cooking process (any melting, mixing, delicious smells) and draw or take a photo of them in the kitchen.
Two girls were so eager to make their recipe they did this last week and brought it in for us to sample! Delicious!

Assembly Stars...

This week at assembly the Special Terrific Person award went to MG and KM received the values. Well done both of you for your great work in R19!

Mothers Day Breakfast

On Friday morning we had a special morning for mums- delicious bacon was cooking and there was a mountain of beautiful jam and cream scones! Thanks for coming mums, grandmothers and aunties. We loved showing you our classroom and we hope you enjoyed the special Mothers Day assembly.

 

 

 

 

 

Tip Top Trip

Today we went to the Tip Top factory. Everyone had a great time and saw and learnt lots about how Tip Top make their ice cream. There was lots of interesting information for us to think about.
Here are some of the interesting facts...
# They use 25,000L of milk and 30,000L of cream each day
# The ice cream base has 4 ingredients- milk, cream, sugar and glucose
# Homogenise means to sieve out the lumps
# Pasteurise means heat the ice cream hot then cool it to kill any bacteria
# Vanilla is the most popular ice cream flavour
# Choc Bar is the most popular stick ice cream
# They use 20 million cones a year
# The machine can fill 35 2L ice cream containers in 1 minute
# A different machine fills 200 ice creams in a cone in 1 minute
# Their main freezer is the size of a supermarket and is -28oc

We weren't allowed to take any photos of the factory but here are some photos of us enjoying a delicious treat at the end of the tour!

This term's Inquiry is 'How did that happen?'  It will focus on kitcen science and we will be visiting Tip Top ice cream factory next week!
